Somehow, we blinked and summer’s already packing its bags. One minute it’s pool days and popsicles, and the next you’re staring down a supply list, a kid who’s mysteriously outgrown every shoe they own, and the annual question of where all the pencils disappear to. (Truly one of life’s great mysteries.)
Back-to-school season can get overwhelming fast—and expensive, if you’re not strategic about it. So I pulled together the items families reach for year after year, the tried-and-true essentials that make the transition from lazy summer to structured school days a whole lot smoother. Whether you’re outfitting a kindergartner, a middle schooler, a teen, or all of the above, these are the buys worth putting on your list.

The Backpack: Where It All Begins
A good backpack is the anchor of the whole back-to-school haul, and it’s one place where spending a little more genuinely pays off. You could be one week into the school year or October, a flimsy bag falls apart but a sturdy one lasts years.
Durable Backpack
Look for a backpack with reinforced seams, padded straps, and enough compartments to keep the chaos organized. Bonus points for a style your kid actually likes—because the “cool” factor is the difference between a backpack that gets used and one that gets left in a locker. For older students, there’s nothing like the OG -Jansport. Plus, a backpack with a laptop sleeve is worth prioritizing.

PADDED COMFORT FIT: Padded shoulder straps ease all-day school carry whether kids are loaded up with books, gym clothes, weekend gear or after-school sport kits. HOLDS YOUR HYDRATION: Two side water bottle pockets each fit up to a 32 oz water bottle — built for school days, soccer practice, weekend playdates, day camp, family outings and youth sport practice. Reusable Water Bottle
A durable, leak-proof water bottle is a daily essential (and one that tends to go missing, so a recognizable color or style helps). Insulated versions keep water cold all day, which makes kids way more likely to actually drink it.
